Venice Film Festival: Places to stay and Eat in Italia

Here's what to do throughout and following the fest, from Francis Ford Coppola's latest venture towards the hotel once leased out entirely by The Actor-brad Pitt.our editor recommendsVenice Worldwide Film Festival in a CrossroadsGeorge Clooney's 'The Ides of March' to spread out Venice Film FestivalVenice Film Festival Uncovers Selection VENICE Where You Can EAT: The area to energy lunch throughout the festival (August. 31-Sept. 10) will probably be the bistro-style NARANZARIA, about the fringe of the Grand Canal and possessed by Agnelli heir Count Brandino Brandolini d'Adda. Clean lower the swordfish carpaccio with a few Friuli wine in the count's nearby wineries (Sotoportego del Erbaria,San Polo, naranzaria.it). Make a booking for lunch in the city's latest star-recognizing hub, RISTORANTE QUADRI (Piazza San Marco 121, caffequadri.it) on St. Mark's Square. Its Michelin three-star chef Massimiliano Alajmo this season switched a stuffy old coffee shop right into a buzzy gourmet destination. Make certain to order the eight-course tasting menu (&euro180) when Venetian-style risotto is about the bill. About the Lido, where festival tests occur, Italian director Tinto Brass (La Vacanza, Caligula) suggests OSTERIA AL MERCA (Via Enrico Dandolo 17/A, Lido, +39-041-526-4549). "Fresh seafood prepared well. It's unpretentious and friendly," he states. STORY: Venice Film Festival Uncovers Selection Places To Stay: Because of his hideaway in Lake Como, George Clooney generally is an Italian-American, but he also offers a popular place in Venice -- the bar at HOTEL CIPRIANI (Giudecca 10, hotelcipriani.com, doubles from about $1,350), really the only rival towards the industry-heavy private bar in the Hotel Excelsior about the Lido. The cocktail Clooney invented in the Cip, the Buonanotte (vodka-cranberry spiked with muddled ginger root and cucumber), triggered this type of stir a couple of years back that it is a standard feature of recption menus. The needed-refurbished hotel oozes the same kind of Hollywood glamour Clooney does its 100 rooms and suites are timelessly chic and packed with mosaics and marble. Bonus: The Cipriani (pictured below) is virtually paparazzi-proof since it's on the private island obtainable only through the hotel's launch. However for contemporary design, follow The Actor-brad Pitt's lead: He taken over the whole 26-room PALAZZINA GRASSI (San Marco, palazzinagrassi.com, rooms from about $500) when he resided in Venice to film The Tourist. Clearly, Depp's keen on Philippe Starck's surrealism because the French maverick oversaw the overhaul of the 16th century palazzo (think transparent closets and 1000's of extra-large mirrors) if this reopened 18 several weeks ago. Throughout the festival, Palazzina G transforms right into a pop-from balance-skipped New You are able to boite Bungalow 8. Expect high-quality crowds like this past year, when Quentin Tarantino and Harvey Weinstein stopped through the roof bar. STORY:Venice Worldwide Film Festival in a Crossroads BASILICATA Places To Stay: Director-hotelier Francis Ford Coppola has came back to his roots within the rustic southern region of Basilicata, opening his latest hotel in Bernalda, the small hilltop village that his grandfather emigrated to America. The 12-room PALAZZO MARGHERITA (Corso Umberto I 70, coppolaresorts.com, doubles from about $575) is really a converted 1800s rental property created by Jacques Grange that's set to spread out this season and have a brand new gourmet restaurant. Sofia Coppola will inaugurate your accommodation at the end of August together with her wedding to composer Thomas Mars. Venice Film Festival Competition Jury Introduced ROME Where You Can EAT: Woodsy Allen's latest film-cum-travelogue -- The Bop Decameron, that they's shooting with Ellen Page, Roberto Benigni and Penelope Cruz -- spotlights Fellini-era Rome. The director continues to be spotted more often than once at PIPERNO (Monte p Cenci 9, ristorantepiperno.com), noted for its "Jewish style" artichokes, that are fried whole. Drive in the city center towards the landmark LA PERGOLA (Via Alberto Cadlolo 101, romecavalieri.com/lapergola.php) within the Rome Cavalieri hotel. Michelin-star-hogging chef Heinz Beck serves six- and nine-course tasting menus (&euro175, &euro198) that always include his deconstructed carbonara -- pouches of pasta full of sausage and barely cooked egg. Otherwise, a grungy, authentic spot to try spaghetti carbonara may be the trattoria PERILLI (Via Marmorata 39, +39-06-574-2415) within the working-class Testaccio neighborhood. For beautiful-watching people, mind to trendy new ELLE (Via Vittorio Veneto 81, elleristorantecaffetteria.com), a popular of Italian actress Clotilde Courau. Places To Stay: The Eternal City's best hotels are boutique hideaways from spying eyes -- there's grounds the term "paparazzo" originates from Italia. Situated on luxury shopping drag Via del Babuino, the 14-room BABUINO 181 (Via del Babuino 181, romeluxurysuites.com/babuino, doubles from about $315) offers Frette-sheeted sleeping rooms, marble baths along with a roof bar. Minutes in the legendary Piazza Navona, there's the similarly low-key, high-style GIGLI D'ORO (Via dei Gigli d'Oro 12, giglidorosuite.com, doubles from about $310), annually-old hotel with six all-whitened rooms inside a refurbished 15th century palazzo. PHOTOS:Cannes Film Festival 2011 TUSCANY Places To Stay: There's no finer base about the Tuscan Riviera than IL PELLICANO in Porto Ercole (Localita Sbarcatello, pellicanohotel.com, doubles from $540). Opened up in 1965, your accommodation is the topic of the brand new Rizzoli picture book Hotel Il Pellicano ($60), including vintage Slim Aarons photos from the sun-tanned likes of Douglas Fairbanks Junior. and designer Emilio Pucci. Set on the cypress-dotted high cliff, the terra cotta-roofed hotel features 50 rooms and suites, a saltwater pool along with a private beach. It is constantly on the lure high-profile visitors: Darren Star (honoring his 50th birthday) and Graydon Carter were spotted on a single weekend in This summer. "It's luxurious, it feels retro. There's a jet-set vibe," states Project Runway professional producer Desiree Gruber, a current guest. "It's a household-run hotel, and you will believe.Inch Eric J. Lyman led for this report. The Artist Trailer: Silent Starpower

Cannes favorite The Artist looks flashy and frothy, but that combination is perfect for Michel Hazanavicius’s sumptuous melodrama (in theaters Nov. 23) set in old Hollywood. It’s chock-full of Errol Flynn mustaches, Marcel waves, mink stoles, and the kind of magnificent Tinseltown excesses that killed everyone on E!’s Mysteries and Scandals. The new English trailer is available in HD, so let’s watch ahead. Hard not to marvel at the authenticity here; love the costuming, old cameras, celluloid streams, screens, and billboards. Although the perfectly cast Jean Dujardin and the stunning Brnice Bejo are dead ringers for ’20s glamorpusses, the brief appearance of John Goodman is the trailer’s finest moment. (James Cromwell, Missi Pyle, and Penelope Ann Miller also co-star.) Not that I dote on old Hollywood, but to see Goodman slamming down a fist like Charles Laughton — with big, broad gusto — is pure magic. I’d give anything to see him in a remake of Witness for the Prosecution with Cate Blanchett in the Dietrich role and — what the hell? — Dujardin here as the Tyrone Power role. Until then, we have The Artist to fill the nostalgic void. (Though, point of order: This is a ’20s movie, and the first song we hear is 1936’s “Sing, Sing, Sing.” Hmmm.) VERDICT: Who the hell wouldn’t want to see this? Head over to Apple to watch in HD.

Former Tribune CEO Randy Michaels Launches All-News Radio Station in New York

NEW YORK - Merlin Media, the new company of former Tribune CEO Randy Michaels, said on Monday that it has launched FM News 101.9 as the Big Apple's only 24-hour FM all-news radio station. Michaels left Tribune late last year amid controversy and reports that he had hurt its image by encouraging frat boy behavior. Earlier this summer though, he announced the acquisition of majority stakes in two radio stations in Chicago and WRXP-FM in New York with private equity firm GTCR. Merlin Media, which holds the stations, said Monday that the New York rock station will now be a news outfit - as some had predicted - and focus on "the real-life information needs of on-the-go adults and working parents." Beyond the on-air content, the station said it will offer personalized online and mobile content that promotes audience participation through social media and digital video. "As music moves to the mobile device, now is the time to put spoken word on the band most people use," said Merlin CEO Michaels. "Our one-to-many broadcasts will be supplemented by personalized, one-to-one interactive content so that instead of commercials that interrupt a tired music playlist, we offer our marketing partners multiplatform solutions that build brands and move product in the best possible environment." At the end of July, Merlin Media unveiled a similar strategy in Chicago with the launch of what it said would be the Windy City's only 24-hour all-news station - FM News 101.1. "Spoken word, since the beginning of radio, has consistently been the top billing format in the world," said Merlin COO Walter Sabo. "No one gets their news from a singular source in today's fragmented media world," said said Liz Aiello, vp of programming, Merlin Media. "In developing our strategy for FM News 101.9, we really wanted to create a unique environment that presents inspiring, relatable, pleasant and fun content that comes to you just as it would from a friend." Among the New York news station's talent is Steve Langford, formerly the lead reporter for Howard Stern's Howard 100 News. Brett Ratner Signs New Overall Deal With 20th TV, Taps Chris Conti As President

EXCLUSIVE: Director-producer Brett Ratner has closed a new overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television where he has been based for the past 7 years. He is being joined by former NBC development executive-turned-producer Chris Conti, who will serve as president of Ratner's Rat TV. "It's impossible not to love Brett," 20th TV chairman Dana Walden said. "He is a great entertainer, has such love for the business and has the most commercial sense of any creative person I've ever worked with." She praised Ratner for directing the pilot for the Fox drama Prison Break, which "helped reestablish what the 20th Century Fox TV brand is around the world." But for the past 7 years, Ratner has directed only one other 20th TV pilot that has gone to series, CBS' short-lived CIA dramedy Chaos. He has developed and produced a total of 3 series, Prison Break, Chaos and ABC's Women's Murder Club. That is mainly because Ratner has been busy working on a wide range of other projects, from directing and producing features, to producing documentaries and TV specials to now producing the Academy Awards. Bringing a seasoned development executive like Conti is expected to keep development and production at Rat TV going full-speed even when Ratner is not around. "Chris is bringing a lot of formidable relationships in the community and will be able to focus Brett in a meaningful and successful way," Walden said. Following a 15-year stint at NBC, rising from a page to head of drama development, Conti segued into producing in 2005 with a deal at the network's sister studio. While at NBC, he had taken pitches from Ratner but didn't know him personally until the two were recently introduced. "He wanted to grow his company and make it close to what Jerry Bruckheimer and John Wells have built," Conti said. At the same time I was getting frustrated schlepping along without a company and not having a partner." He and Ratner are already meeting with writers and are expected to focus on 3-5 drama ideas this development season, gradually expanding into comedy and reality. As for Ratner's duties as an Oscar producer, Walden said that they will not impact Rat TV's development, especially now that Conti is on board. Directing-wise, Ratner won't be able to helm an hourlong pilot because he will be in the final stages of Oscar preparations but could direct a half-hour pilot after the Academy Awards. At Rat TV, Conti is replacing former president Martha Haight who has since loved to CBS TV Studios to run Mark Harmon's company. Ratner recently produced hit feature comedy Horrible Bosses, Showtime's Nick Cannon: Mr. Show Biz special and PBS' American Masters: Woody Allen documentary. His next movie as a director, comedy Tower Heist, opens in November.
