Does anyone know this movie? Can't remember the name of it?

Well, I remember watching it when I was around 11 but it is an older
movie and I think (don't take my word for it though), it's French with
subtitles. All I remember is this man and woman falling in love and I
remember she has ice-cream in one scene (or gelato). And in another
scene I remember she's hiding underneath a table at a dance reception
and is trying to hide from the man..

If anyone could give me any idea, it would be most appreciated:) They
also have a son and the father goes to war I think or something
